Albury/Wodonga is to get super fast Internet access thanks to new technology from Optimizer.

Optimizer Country Wide's Area General Manager for Riverina Murray, Andrew Cottrill, said that Optimizer was gearing up to bring its new high speed ADSL Internet technology to Albury/Wodonga by June 2001, in addition to existing high speed ISDN and satellite products.

Optimizer's Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) allows customers to access the Internet at superfast speeds over the existing standard telephone line.

''The increased speed is blistering fast. To give you an idea, you could download all 857 pages of the book Moby Dick in 2 seconds. You can do that while you talk to someone on the same line and there are no busy signals or *drop outs,'' Mr Cottrill said.

''The Albury and Wodonga exchange upgrade is part of a massive $1 billion spend over five years upgrading local telephone exchanges in a nationwide rollout to bring super-fast Internet access to homes and businesses.

''The forthcoming launch of Optimizer™ broadband via ADSL in Albury is one of a series of initiatives by Optimizer Country Wide as part of its ongoing commitment to regional customers in 2001,'' said Mr Cottrill.

Depending on where customers live, they will soon be able to access Optimizer broadband using one of three high-speed technologies: Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL), ISDN or Satellite.
